Each of the region’s individual counties have their own delights to offer. Head to Yorkshire to experience the romantic notion of life in the North. In the east of Yorkshire, you can attend festivals, visit aquariums, watch the horse racing and more, while in the west you have the city of Leeds, with its museums, theatres and more, as well as the chance to explore Victorian history of Bradford. This part of the north is what inspired Wuthering Heights, so take the chance to sneak a peak at the Bronte’s homes and follow their literary heritage. Whereas you’ll find the Peak District in the south of the county where you can enjoy a national park, the regal city of Doncaster. There are cute hamlets, charming country pubs and novelties like the steam railway already for you to explore. Fans of Emmerdale will want to head to North Yorkshire, where the great outdoors is in abundance. Recharge in country pubs and join in some of the accessible walking trails through the moors taking in the castles and ruins on the way.
If that doesn’t tickle your fancy, the county of Tyne and Wear is full of sandy beaches, cities and plenty of Roman heritage for you to explore. The whole region is made up of a diverse variety of attractions and events that are wheelchair accessible and autism friendly, as well as having a host of other accessible facilities, so there will be something to suit everyone’s tastes and budgets. This is where you can explore the heritage of Hadrian’s Wall and visit the biggest science centre in the UK.
Then there is Northumberland with its historical sites and vast landscapes, it boasts more castles than any other English county, so is ideal for anyone interested in history. There are plenty of stately homes and beautiful gardens and plenty of all-weather attractions, including museums, galleries and more.
Inclusivity is important to event organisers and attractions in the North East, you’ll find that the museums, galleries and other similar places have everything from level access, wheelchair accessibility, hearing loops and activities that are suitable for every ability. There are guided tours at many of the outdoor trails, with large print guides and headsets for those who are hard of hearing.
There is a full calendar of events going on all year around in the various counties of the North East offering lots of different events from music to food and family friendly activities. Many of these organisations and venues work hard to make themselves as accessible as possible, you’ll find a list of those venues and attractions that advertise these services here, but if you have any questions, the organisers and hosts will be happy to offer advice.
