The North Yorkshire Moors Railway and Visit England have teamed up to promote the accessibility of venues across the North York Moors. The project includes a number of places across the moors, including the National Park and other well known attractions like Whitby Abbey.
The railway will be launching four fully accessible coaches on the network from April 2023, which means that all carriage sets will have one historic coach that has been adapted to make sure everyone with access requirements can have an enjoyable visit. The coaches will have ramps, accessible toilets and accessible seating areas.
Speaking to reporters about the project, Laura Strangeway, Director of Corporate Service and Deputy CEO at North Yorkshire Moors Railway, said: “We want as many people as possible to enjoy our fabulous heritage railway, and this Visit England partnership will allow us to ensure every facet is accessible to all, it’s an exciting time and we hope to have as many people as possible with us on the journey.
“Partnerships play an important role here at the NYMR – whether it is the Heritage Railway Association, Visit York, North York Moors National Park or simply our local community. This project is part of the bigger picture for both the NYMR and the region as a whole.”
