North of England

For those of you planning a trip to the North of England, here’s our suggestions for places to stay across Yorkshire, Cheshire and Northumberland. Wherever you want to explore in the North of England, you’ll find the perfect base for your adventures.

For a hotel option, check out Rudding Park near Harrogate in North Yorkshire. As a winner of the Accessibility Awards at the annual AA Hospitality Awards 2022 and Catey Accessibility Awards 2018 – you’ll find plenty of accessible features here. Rudding Park’s ethos is that every guest has different needs and they are committed to ensuring that the hotel is accessible to all. A lift is available for hotel residents to access the hotel’s spa, which also has adapted facilities. A hoist is also available to help you use the pools.

If you’d rather try your hand at glamping, Experience Freedom Glamping have a number of sites across the UK, including Cayton Village near Scarborough. With universally accessible glamping pods and cabins for those with additional needs, the accommodation here provides family friendly living spaces with everything you could need for a break, including free WiFi and orthopaedic mattresses. Dogs are also welcome to stay with you – they even get their own bowls, treats and waste bags!

Calvert Kielder can also be found in the North of England. Located in Northumberland, Calvert Kielder offers a choice of accessible accommodation, including in the main centre and self catering chalets to suit everyone from those travelling alone, to those travelling as a couple, a family or a group of friends. Calvert is a great place for the adventurous, with a host of adapted activities, led by fully qualified instructors. Suitable for guests with a wide range of abilities and an inclusive environment – once you’re here, you won’t want to leave!

Looking for something a little less energetic? Why not try a self catering property where you can set the pace? Sandhole Cottages are in the Cheshire countryside and have a fully accessible holiday cottage known as the Burrows. The Burrows features its own parking space, right outside the property, as well as ramp access and open plan living area. You can even bring your dogs – they’ll be welcomed with their own doggie goodie bag and there is even a doggie shower in case they get muddy while out and about! South of England

With beautiful coasts and a host of holiday destinations, the South of England is incredibly diverse. If you’re planning a trip to the southern areas of the country, here are some suggestions.

We’ve already mentioned Calvert Kielder, but did you know Calvert also have a site in the south? Calvert Exmoor is set on the edge of Exmoor National Park in North Devon and is fully accessible with high quality facilities and professionally adaptive accommodation and activities. Whatever you want to try out, you’ll find here. People with a host of needs have been visiting Calvert Exmoor since 1996 and continue to do so – it’s a great place for anyone who wants to push themselves in a positive, safe and challenging way.

Elsewhere in the North Devon area, there is the Watersmeet Hotel. Set in a wildly romantic location with incredible views, the hotel is often described as the premier coastal escape in the region. The hotel is wheelchair friendly and guests can reserve parking spaces near the door should they need to.

If you like the idea of a hotel stay, check out Marsham Court Hotel in Bournemouth. This award winning hotel overlooks Bournemouth Bay and is just a five minute walk to the beach and town centre. With its Changing Places facilities, use of WelcoMe and other equipment, it is one of the most accessible hotels in the UK.

Midlands

With cities like Birmingham and access to open countryside, the Midlands are a great option for Easter breaks.

East of England and London

England’s capital, London is a great place for a city break, though there are difficulties for those of us with additional needs as it is very busy. However, you’ll find with step free access at many tube stations and adapted taxis and buses all over the capital, it is easy to get around, once you know how. The wider East of England area is full of fascinating places to visit and lovely places to stay.

For those of you visiting London, book a stay at AbleStay,  a self catering property that is designed with accessibility in mind. The bedroom and wetroom provides two fully profiling beds with ceiling hoists, as well as adjustable bath, shower trolly and toilet chairs. The living space is open plan and is wheelchair accessible and with it sleeping six, it’s a great option for families or groups wanting to explore London. The house is the only one of its kind within the M25 and can be found in Worcester Park, just a 10 minute journey from an accessible station with direct access to Waterloo in the centre.

If you’d rather avoid London and explore the East of England, places like Oxfordshire also have lovely self catering accommodation, for example Kingfisher Barn. Here you’ll find accommodation that has been adapted for a wide range of accessible needs. There is step free access to nearly all the properties, with level access around the site and the Stable Cottage has ceiling tracking for hoists, should you need them.

On the other side, in Norfolk, Sparham Hall Farm Holidays has the Buttery, a fully accessible cottage that sleeps up to four. With plenty of space and easy access to the region’s best loved attractions, this is a great place to set up base for your break in the East of England.
